About Cooking Oils

The majority of all refined oils sold in the UK are produced in the UK at one of these refineries   www.adm.com/oils  & www.cargill.co.uk

before being transported to the canning site.

The most notable canning sites in the UK are: KTC, Westmill foods, Olympic & Kerfoot.

If you are using GM soya bean oil for frying or as an ingredient, the food sold must be labelled as GM or if the food is sold loose informations must be displayed next to it indicating that it is GM. For more info see link below.

Where are Cooking Oils Produced?

Oil & Food Labelling?

Vegetable oil is a generic term, which covers all vegetable based oils such as Rapeseed, Sunflower, Olive oil & GM Soya.

Generally the canning company will use the cheapest oil on the market to sell in the vegetable oil cans. Historically this has been GM Soya.

You will need to look in the ingredients section on the can. Only this will tell you which type of oil is in the can.

Up till recently we have found vegetable oil sold by Brakes and Bidfoods/Bidvest/3663 to be rapeseed oil & Vegetable oil sold by Penta foods & other food service brands to be GM Soya.
