What Are the benefits of using rapeseed oil in cooking?

Rapeseed oil (sometimes called canola oil) is growing in popularity with top chefs like Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson discussing it’s benefits. Often hailed as an healthier alternative, rapeseed cooking oil not only tastes great but is also a really versatile cooking ingredient used in a huge range of recipes.

Rapeseed plants, which produce the seeds that rapeseed oil is made from, are part of the brassica family and sit alongside some of the UK’s favourite vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Rapeseed oil is a British product, and is one of only 2 cooking oils (the other being linseed oil) that are produced in the UK.

Standard rapeseed oil is often simply called vegetable oil, so you’d have to check the label to see your usual vegetable oil is made from rapeseed. You can also buy premium rapeseed oil, which is often called virgin or extra-virgin oil.

Rapeseed oil has many different names, including:

Cooking benefits

Rapeseed cooking oil is a firm favourite in many kitchens because it doesn’t burn or smoke when used to cook at very high temperatures. This makes it very versatile, so can easily be used to bake, roast, shallow, or deep fry high quantities of food.

When used in baking, as an alternative to standard fats or butters, it can lower the saturated fat content of the final product, making it much healthier and, and is also an ideal vegan substitute.

Many chefs also chose rapeseed oil because it also tastes great when used cold, for example in dressings, marinades and sauces.

Health benefits

Rapeseed cooking oil is thought to be much healthier because it contains fewer unhealthy saturated fats. It does, however, contain lots of vitamin E and is high in mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats omega 3, 6 and 9, which are beneficial for helping to balance healthy cholesterol levels.

Great taste

The taste of rapeseed oil can vary between producers and even regions, but it is most well known for having a light and delicate flavour.

This makes it ideal for infusing with spices and other flavours.
